New-build monastery, St Sixtus Abbey

As a result of fissuring and settling, and in order to meet the present needs of the fraternity, the existing buildings of the Cistercian St Sixtus Abbey are being thoroughly renewed.

There will be a new cloister square with a new corridor that connects with the present abbey church. The ‘old church’ will be used as refectory and library. Instead of sleeping in the present dormitory, the monks will be given individual rooms, located on the first floor. On the ground floor, there is room for a Chapter House, the Scriptorium, a social area and an infirmary.

The building is raised in accordance with the values of the monks: Sobriety and simplicity, truth and beauty, durability, eye for spirituality, balance between community spirit and personal responsibility, respect for the Cistercian traditions and a contemporary design.

For this project, Ingenium is charged with the design and monitoring of the execution of all technical equipment (heating, ventilation, sanitary facilities, outside sewer systems, high voltage and low voltage systems, lift system, catering). The planned technical systems will be designed in accordance with the same durable energy philosophy that is being applied to the buildings. Besides extensive isolation of the building (K25), combined with good air tightness, the abbey opted for application of renewable energy sources. A biomass-based heat production unit will supply the heating energy. The biomass will be partly supplied from own sources through processing of wood waste from forest management, and partly purchased.
