The majority of the 73 ha site, where oil tankers used to moor, is nowadays a polluted and deserted wasteland.
The site has tremendous potential due to its unique situation, close to the city and with easy access to various means of transport consisting of waterways, railways and road.
The Blue Gate Antwerp project will revalorise the site into an energy positive enterprise zone, with eco-effectiveness as the core philosophy. On the site, a new quay will be constructed alongside the logistics zone, moreover the site will also contain high value production, research and development, a new football stadion and an important green corridor.
In order to realise eco-effectiveness, a global vision is developed. This vision focuses on following opportunities: wind turbines, biomass, cogeneration, recycling of residual heat and residual energy, storage of energy, … Mobility through electrical cars, H2 and biogas is an important subject due to the sustainable ambitions, the proximity of the city, and the role of the site as a distribution center.
The study is carried out under the authority and with the close cooperation of the Flemish Environment Holding / Participation Society / the City of Antwerp.
