Carbon neutrality

Buildings are responsible for a significant proportion of global carbon emissions and moving to carbon-neutral buildings is an important step towards a more sustainable future. In the built environment, this means designing, building and managing buildings in a way that produces net zero CO2 emissions. This would mean that all carbon emissions produced by the building, such as in heating, cooling and electricity use, would be offset by an equivalent amount of carbon uptake or reduction elsewhere.

Another strategy is to switch to cleaner energy sources, such as solar or wind power, for heating, cooling and electricity. This can be done through on-site generation, such as installing solar panels on the building's roof, or by buying energy from external, renewable sources.

Building design plays an important role in reducing CO2 emissions and operational costs. Green roofs, shading elements, operable windows and natural ventilation are some of the design principles that help control temperature and energy consumption.
