Antwerp prison project

The Hortus Conclusus consortium has been awarded the contract for the design, construction, financing and maintenance of the new prison in Antwerp. Ingenium is responsible for the design together with Hootmans Architectuurbureau, ARCH & TECO and Bureau Bas Smets.

So what’s special in this project? The client, the Belgian Government Buildings Agency (Regie der Gebouwen) has imposed a BREEAM score of at least 'very good', but the consortium is raising the bar and opting for the 'excellent' certificate!

The ecological footprint of the complex is limited not only by functional and compact construction and by providing a lot of greenery. In terms of energy, we are also doing everything we can to make this one of Belgium’s most energy-efficient detention centres. Thus, CO2 emissions are limited by using the energy plant and the district heating network of Blue Gate Antwerp, the adjacent eco-efficient, water-bound business park, for the production and supply of heating.
